Set in early‑20th‑century Ávila, nine‑year‑old Pedro arrives with his tutor to live with schoolmaster Don Mateo, who will guide his education. He quickly bonds with Don Mateo’s wife, Doña Gregoria, and his daughter, Martina. Alfredo, a fellow student and roommate, later joins, completing his circle of friendships. In the provincial setting, the relationships and Don Mateo’s lessons on life and death shape Pedro’s future.
