In the mid-1970s, nine-year-old Rico and his mother, Erzulie, are forced to leave their homeland in Haiti and immigrate to Canada. Struggling to adapt to their new life, a rift develops between them. He finds solace and guidance from Kana, an imaginary friend inspired by Haitian mythology, who helps him understand his new reality and find his place.
