Returning to Berlin after World War I, a decorated soldier discovers that his only training is military and that civilian work is limited to menial, low‑paying jobs. With few prospects, he chooses to become a paid companion for affluent, lonely women, navigating the desperate and decadent atmosphere of post‑war Berlin.
