Lacy is introduced as an 11-year-old girl living in western Massachusetts with her single mother, Janet. Their close-knit relationship is emphasized, showcasing Janet's role as an acupuncturist and Lacy's dependence on her.

During a summer camp in 1991, Lacy experiences a moment of crisis, calling her mother to express her intention to harm herself if she isn't picked up. However, after a positive interaction with her fellow campers, Lacy regrets making that call.

Janet begins dating Wayne, a middle-aged man who displays odd behavior and suffers from migraines. Although Lacy develops a friendship with Wayne's daughter Sequoia, she holds a strong dislike for Wayne himself, leading to tension in their household.

During one of Wayne's migraines, Lacy annoys him, causing him to charge at her in anger. This confrontation prompts Janet to consult Lacy for advice, leading to the suggestion that she should break up with Wayne.

Following Lacy's advice, Janet ends her relationship with Wayne. The breakup marks a significant shift for both Janet and Lacy, allowing their relationship to regain some stability and comfort.

After the breakup, Janet and Lacy attend a performance by a group led by Avi, a charismatic spiritual leader. During this event, Janet reconnects with an old friend, Regina, who subsequently leaves the commune she belongs to and moves in with them.

As Regina settles into their home, her relationship with Janet becomes strained over issues like rent and past mistakes. Lacy, who gets along well with Regina, finds herself caught in the middle of this growing tension.

Avi returns to Janet's life, rekindling a connection with her while simultaneously taking Regina back to the commune. This development complicates the dynamics of Lacy’s household and affects her perception of both adults.

On the first day of sixth grade, Lacy is plagued with severe headaches. Despite her misgivings about medications, Janet prioritizes Lacy's health by obtaining antibiotics to help her recover.

While Lacy is recovering, Janet goes on a date with Avi. The date includes a hike and a picnic where they bond over poetry, but suddenly, without explanation, Avi disappears, leaving Janet to return home alone.

Once Lacy recovers from her headaches, she resumes attending middle school. This adjustment period signifies a new chapter in her life as she navigates the complexities of growing up.

In the fall, Janet takes Lacy to a school dance. As Janet enjoys the evening moving between partners, Lacy observes from a distance, feeling the pangs of adolescent social dynamics and her mother's interactions.
