The film begins with a documentary crew capturing the activities at Wander to Greater Paths Baptist Church, led by Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs and his wife, First Lady Trinitie. The couple manages a large, influential megachurch that has amassed a significant following and brought in considerable wealth. However, their world is quickly destabilized when scandal erupts around Lee-Curtis, involving allegations of misconduct with young men, which leads to a fierce backlash, the church’s closure, and a mass exodus of supporters.

In an effort to salvage their reputation, Lee-Curtis and Trinitie aim to reopen the church by Easter Sunday. Despite their intentions, the documentary captures their costly lifestyle—showing off designer clothes, a grand fountain, and an overall display of material excess—highlighting the disparity between their public persona and the mounting controversy. While many in the congregation turn away from them, they still retain a small core of loyal supporters, including five dedicated followers who continue attending Lee-Curtis’s sermons.

Meanwhile, another pastoral couple, Keon and Shakura Sumpter, played by Conphidance and Nicole Beharie, are planning to open their own church called Heaven’s Home on Easter Sunday. They are inspired by the Childs’ success but have attracted many of the former congregants who once followed Lee-Curtis. This rivalry adds another layer of tension, as both churches vie for attention and followers in the community.

During a Wednesday service, Lee-Curtis and Trinitie gather with their small inner circle, including Deacon and Deaconess Culpepper, Kensington, and Sapphire and Aria DeVaughn. They remain convinced of Lee-Curtis’s innocence, steadfast in their belief that the allegations are untrue. Their interactions are marked by typical church drama, including a humorous argument about the pronunciation of “amen” during a baptism practice. Following the service, they drive past Heaven’s Home, worried about the potential loss of their influence and financial stability.

Back at home, the couple attempts intimacy, but the scene is interrupted, hinting at underlying strain in their relationship. Trinitie then plans to get her hair done and buy a new bonnet but becomes visibly upset after spotting one of the young men linked to the scandal. She later encounters Sister Denetta who, with subtle condescension, indicates she plans to join Heaven’s Home alongside other former supporters—an act that deepens the sense of division and loss.

In another scene, Lee-Curtis is seen playing basketball with a promising young athlete, but things turn awkward when Lee-Curtis makes an unwanted advance; the young man, however, quickly dismisses him, citing his own relationship with a boyfriend, which dampens Lee-Curtis’s hopes of rekindling old flames. Later, Lee-Curtis and Trinitie visit the Sumpters, trying to persuade them to delay their church opening, but the Sumpters are determined to stick with their plan, setting the stage for a tense showdown.

As they prepare to reopen Greater Paths, Lee-Curtis and Trinitie stage a street campaign to attract attention—Trinitie waving a sign and “shaking it for the Lord” in front of passing cars. Their efforts, however, are met with hostility, exemplified by a woman who yells insults at Trinitie, criticizing her and Lee-Curtis for their actions and their attempt to bounce back from scandalous adversity. Trinitie confides in her mother, Sabina, about her frustrations, but her mother urges her to stay loyal to Lee-Curtis, emphasizing the importance of faith and support.

In the midst of their struggles, Trinitie’s mood takes a turn when she spots Khalil, a young man involved in Lee-Curtis’s past misconduct, who publicly condemns Lee-Curtis from his car, further intensifying the controversy. Tensions escalate as Trinitie retreats to the church, expressing her grievances about her marriage and the disloyalty of their former congregation. The documentary crew’s Andrea Laing captures the moment when Trinitie, overwhelmed, snaps at the director, telling her to leave in frustration.

On Easter Sunday, the day everyone has been anxiously waiting for, Lee-Curtis and Trinitie gather outside the church, hopeful that their efforts will pay off. Lee-Curtis makes a snide remark about Trinitie’s bonnet, which she dismisses with annoyance, telling him to “shut up.” A car drives onto the lot, but instead of coming to support them, a young man inside performs donuts in the parking lot, only fueling Lee-Curtis’s false hope that supporters are arriving. Meanwhile, the Conphidance’s Keon and Nicole Beharie’s Shakura announce that they have decided to move their opening date to coincide with Easter, leading to a crowd that draws a much larger turnout at Heaven’s Home. This success starkly contrasts with Lee-Curtis’s expectations and leaves him clinging to hope as he watches his plans unravel.

Throughout the narrative, the film explores themes of faith, reputation, community, and personal downfall. It vividly depicts the complex dynamics of a church intertwined with personal flaws, ambition, and the social pressures that come with public scandals. As Trinitie and Lee-Curtis face their uncertain futures, the story underscores how the pursuit of redemption can often be hampered by pride, betrayal, and the challenge of maintaining integrity in the face of adversity.
