Augusto Genina’s Cielo Sulla Palude, released in Venice as Heaven Over the Marshes, is set in the Pontine Marshes near Rome, the home of young saint Maria Goretti. It dramatizes her murder by a would‑be seducer and the events that led to her canonization shortly after the film’s release. Ines Orsini plays Goretti, and the film marked Genina’s post‑war comeback after his earlier pro‑fascist work led to a blacklist.
