Johan Ten Berghe joins the Dutch army as the Dutch East Indies declares independence, entering Indonesia. He guides his inexperienced driver Twan, son of the missing officer Hendrik, while recalling his childhood bond with native Oeroeg, now a rebel, and their nanny‑stepmother, forcing them to confront divided loyalties amid rising violence.
