In 1957, second-graders Bryce Loski and Julianna 'Juli' Baker first meet, setting the stage for a complex relationship. For Juli, it's instant infatuation, while Bryce feels an overwhelming sense of hesitation towards her affections.

As they progress through school, Bryce repeatedly finds himself trying to avoid Juli, who remains smitten. Their constant interaction, living across the street and attending the same school, complicates Bryce's efforts to distance himself from her.

In sixth grade, Bryce devises a plan to push Juli away by asking out her rival, Sherry Stalls. However, when Juli learns about this, she becomes even more invested in Bryce, believing he secretly cares for her.

By 1963, seventh grade introduces new challenges and complexities for both children. Bryce’s grandfather, Chet, moves in and begins to see Juli's unique qualities, prompting him to push Bryce to recognize his growing feelings for her.

Juli's attachment to an old sycamore tree becomes a focal point of her life, especially when town officials decide to cut it down. In a bid to save the tree, Juli climbs it and refuses to come down, demonstrating her fierce dedication.

After the loss of the sycamore tree, Juli receives a painting of it from her father, which brings her comfort. This moment inspires her to share her love for the tree with the world, showing her resilience in the face of adversity.

In an attempt to create beauty around her, Juli raises chickens and sells their eggs only to discover Bryce's family has been discarding them. Despite this pain, she bonds with Chet, who encourages her identity and creativity.

As Juli's relationship with Chet strengthens, she begins to question her feelings for Bryce. A visit to her uncle Daniel leads to revelations, but overhearing Bryce mock her with his friend shatters her interest in him.

The situation escalates when their families arrange a dinner that takes a turn for the worse due to Bryce's father's rude remarks. This encounter reinforces Juli's decision to distance herself from Bryce.

At the school basket boy auction, Bryce witnesses Juli seemingly bidding for him, only to realize she is actually interested in another boy. This miscommunication leads to feelings of jealousy for Bryce as Juli enjoys the attention.

In the midst of Juli’s tears over their failing friendship, Bryce becomes desperate to apologize. His attempts range from ringing her doorbell to climbing through her window, showcasing his determination to make amends.

Bryce digs a hole in Juli's yard to plant a baby sycamore tree as a symbol of his remorse and a new beginning. This heartfelt action surprises Juli and allows them to reconnect as they plant the tree together.
