The adaptation changes national and political context, relationships, and particular incidents while preserving the protagonist's refusal to perform the feelings expected of him. Matthew Ward's translation restores Camus's exact first-person sequence and makes clear what the film translates through framing, duration, and Musa's opaque physical presence.
