In 1743 a mysterious epidemic sweeps the French countryside, leaving the villages deserted. Two centuries later a young woman awakens feeling unusually languid after a sleepless night. Her husband soon receives a letter summoning him to a remote business appointment that requires an overnight stay. As he tries to calm his wife’s growing sense of impending separation, the first night he spends at the host’s house sets off events that upend everything.
