BluffCo has been dumping waste into Lucky Duck Lake under the leadership of CEO Bill Bluff, and the pollution sparks the appearance of a friendly, unexpected creature. Doug Funnie, voiced by [Thomas McHugh], and Skeeter Valentine discover the newcomer and bring him home, where the creature earns the name Herman Melville after he tries to snack on a copy of Moby-Dick, a moment vividly voiced by [Frank Welker]. The discovery sets off a chain of choices that test loyalty, honesty, and courage, all unfolding against a backdrop of corporate greed and small-town politics.
Not wanting the creature to be found or exploited, Doug and Skeeter devise a cover story, disguising Herman as a foreign exchange student named Hermione. This ruse sparks jealousy in Patti Mayonnaise, the girl Doug admires, as she notices the unusual attention he receives from this new “student.” Patti Mayonnaise is brought to life on screen by [Constance Shulman], and her growing tension adds a twist to Doug’s plan to protect Herman while keeping his own feelings in check.
Meanwhile, Roger Klotz, voiced by [Chris Phillips], and his cronies learn of Herman and decide to capitalize on the situation by building a robot designed to capture the creature. The machine, however, ends up turning on its creator and grows increasingly overbearing toward Roger, complicating the scheme and highlighting the unintended consequences of meddling with something you barely understand.
Doug and Skeeter take Herman to Mayor Tippi Dink, who warns them that BluffCo would crush any story that reaches the press. The tension escalates as Doug, feeling cornered, announces to the town that he will expose Bluff’s actions if pushed, a moment that reveals the fragility of trust among friends. Guy Graham, a school paper reporter, initially mocks Doug in front of Patti, casting doubt on the truth of their discovery. Guy Graham is portrayed by [Guy Hadley], and his skepticism becomes a turning point when he later stumbles onto a photograph of Herman and realizes that Doug’s claims may be true.
Bluff, sensing trouble, throws BluffCo agents into Doug’s planned press conference, posing as reporters in an attempt to capture Herman. Doug sees through the deception and cancels the conference, yet Herman is nonetheless captured, and Patti’s faith in Doug begins to waver as she concludes that he may have been lying all along. Doug reflects on his actions and recognizes that his own selfishness—protecting Herman without fully reckoning with the risks—led to the current mess.
The next morning, the school newspaper office reveals a bombshell: Guy’s piece accuses Herman of attacking students at the upcoming Valentine’s Day dance and suggests he has been killed by BluffCo agents. Realizing Bluff’s broader plan to bury the truth, Doug and Skeeter recruit Roger, along with Al Sleech and Moo Sleech (voiced by [Eddie Korbich]), to devise a ruse that will expose the corporation without putting Herman at further risk. The sleuths reprogram Roger’s robot to imitate the monster described in Guy’s article, creating a distraction that buys Doug and Skeeter time to rescue Herman.
On the night of the dance, Doug sacrifices his last chance to win Patti back in order to save Herman. Beebe Bluff, Beebe Bluff’s ally, and Mayor Dink overhear Bluff’s tirade, and Beebe defends Doug and Skeeter, while Mayor Dink hints at turning BluffCo’s practices over to government authorities if negotiations stall. Confronted with potential legal and financial ruin, Bluff capitulates and agrees to remediate the lake, effectively ending his company’s pollution schemes. In a heartfelt moment, Herman reveals himself to Patti, who realizes that Doug was telling the truth all along, and she rekindles her trust in him, letting go of Guy.
After the dust settles, the gang says their goodbyes to Herman as he returns to the lake. Doug, still carrying a crush for Patti, attempts to reveal his feelings, but Roger’s timely arrival—grateful for the reprogrammed robot—steals the spotlight and adds a playful goodbye before he scurries off. The final scene returns to the dance, but the core group—Doug, Patti, Skeeter, and Beebe—find a different kind of happiness dancing by the serene lake, a quiet reminder that integrity and courage can triumph over vanity and greed.
