In spring 2020, images from Bergamo, Italy, brought the reality of a global pandemic into focus. As the previously unknown Coronavirus rapidly spread, Germany soon implemented exit and contact restrictions. This event dramatically impacted the life of intensive care physician Dr. Carolin Mellau and her family. As a member of the crisis team, Dr. Mellau prepared the clinic for the surge of patients, facing a high risk of infection while intubating those with COVID-19. Her husband, a musician, lost his livelihood and teaching opportunities, while their teenage children were separated from friends and school.
