In August 1961, East Berlin plasterer Hans Kuhlke smuggles scrap metal to West Berlin. He and his wife attend a dinner at a neighbour’s house while their son Paul is away. Berlin’s borders close and Wall construction begins. Paul’s parents disappear, leaving him torn. He finds refuge with his piano teacher and plans an escape West a race against time.
