Young Dick, enchanted by stories of gold‑strewn London, leaves his rural home to seek fortune. Struggling to find work, he is taken in by a wealthy sea‑merchant as a cook’s assistant, where a hostile cook torments him and rats infest his garret. Starving, a passerby buys him a beer and a coin, which he spends on a cat that will change his fate.
