British associate professor Mrs. Whistler talks to animals in their language, while Czech professor Ruzicka, who also understands them, prefers teaching them human speech. Ruzicka’s poodle Archibald “speaks” English. Their rivalry ends with a wager: if Ruzicka trains the circus elephant to sing, Mrs. Whistler will eat her hat.
