Srubov, a CHEKA officer after the Bolshevik Revolution, conducts lightning‑fast arrests—interrogations last a minute, trials ten seconds—and orders executions of intellectuals, aristocrats, Jews, clergy and their families. In the basement, five naked prisoners are shot at wooden doors and their bodies placed on wagons. Cold, distant, sexually troubled and reviled by friends, he wrestles with the revolution’s purpose until his sanity collapses.
