What Happens at the End of Buba?

How Buba (2022) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

In the end, Jakob, aka Buba, uncovers the truth about his brother Dante’s deceit. For years, Dante had been pretending to be disabled and unwell to manipulate Jakob into suffering and taking on all the hardships, believing that pain was necessary to deserve happiness. In reality, Dante had been perfectly healthy and had orchestrated everything to keep Jakob under his control. The shocking revelation crushes Jakob’s world and highlights the depth of Dante’s cruelty. This betrayal is the culmination of their twisted relationship, built on lies and lies about pain and happiness. Ultimately, Dante’s own despair and guilt drive him to kill himself, ending their tragic saga. After Dante’s death, Jakob is left broken but finally free from his brother’s manipulation. He retreats to a remote ranch, where he lives in solitude, trying to find peace on his own terms. The final scene, where Jakob accidentally shoots himself with a 3D-printed gun, symbolizes the culmination of his self-destructive cycle. However, there is a small sign of hope when he is shown finally breaking open a pistachio nut, suggesting that he might be starting to taste the simpler joys of life. Despite his pain and the chaos that surrounded him, Jakob's journey reflects a painful search for happiness, ultimately influenced by suffering and sacrifice. The film leaves viewers contemplating whether Jakob’s suffering was necessary or if he could have found peace without so much pain, underlining the film’s central theme that happiness and suffering are intricately linked.
