Broken Rage

In the final scenes of Broken Rage, the story comes full circle, but with a twist that blurs reality and absurdity. We see Takeshi, the aging hitman, once again caught in a cycle of police deals and criminal action, but this time, he’s noticeably less competent and more chaotic. The film then reveals that the entire second half, which seemed like an ironic parody of the first, is actually a distorted, exaggerated version of the original story. This repetition emphasizes the cyclic nature of violence, crime, and perhaps fate itself. The big revelation is that Tomita, the man known as M, is actually hidden in his name—To’M’ita—suggesting that the mastermind behind the crimes was always there, embedded in the story from the start.

Moreover, the movie ends with Takeshi stumbling through the cafe door, falling before he even enters, leaving his fate ambiguous. Did he survive or not? Kitano intentionally leaves it open to interpretation, encouraging viewers to reflect on the endless loop of violence and the futility of escape. Is Takeshi doomed to repeat his actions forever? The film’s playful, surreal tone and its repetitive structure seem to suggest that the cycle of crime and chaos is unbreakable, especially when it’s embedded within the very narrative itself. Ultimately, Broken Rage challenges our perceptions of story, fate, and free will, leaving us with a lingering question about whether anyone truly escapes the rage that defines them.
