12‑year‑old Lily and her 8‑year‑old brother alternate weeks between their mother, a businesswoman, and their father, who quit banking to give out free hugs on street corners. Lily blames her mother for the divorce and prefers her broke dad, while her brother turns his sense of injustice into activism. As the school year goes on and their parents try to rebuild, Lily approaches her thirteenth birthday and begins to see the world anew.
