The film follows a young novelist whose devoted, hardworking wife sustains him, while he becomes enticed by a glamorous socialite who whisks him into Shanghai’s extravagant dance halls. Over time he recognizes the hollowness of that glittering urban life and ultimately dismisses it as nothing more than a fleeting pink dream.
