Man of the Moment (1935) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Man of the Moment (1935), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Mary Briany is an office worker who discovers she is being demoted by the boss she secretly loves to clear space for his girlfriend. In a moment of despair, she attempts suicide by jumping into the river. Tony Woodward, a dashing and somewhat indulgent bachelor, happens to drive by, pulls her from the water, and brings her to his mansion. There, his sharp-witted butler Godfrey and Tony do their best to manage a wildly uncooperative guest who refuses to accept the new arrangement with grace. The situation exposes a clash of worlds: Mary is earnest and wary, while Tony is carefree and prone to taking risks.

Meanwhile, Vera Barton, a playful yet spoiled heiress, is poised to marry Tony the next day. Her millionaire father, Mr. Barton, isn’t just interested in tradition—he also envisions a profitable future for himself and his daughter’s fiancé, offering Tony £5000 to seal a business partnership. Vera’s plan to reform Tony—banning smoking and drinking—irritates and intrigues the circle around them, including Lord Rufus Paul, who becomes a sympathetic, if scheming, observer of the unfolding drama.

Mary disrupts Tony’s bachelor party, arriving in the clothes of his younger brother, a bold stunt that unsettles the room and foreshadows the chaos to come. The next morning, Vera and her father stumble upon Tony, Mary, and his friends passed out on the floor, a moment that seals the broken engagement and sets the stage for more drastic choices. With debt mounting—Tony has only about £300—he propositions Mary with a suicide pact: they will gamble their way to fortune in Monte Carlo, and if luck abandons them, they’ll end their lives together.

The first day in Monte Carlo is rough, and the two come within a hair’s breadth of jumping from a cliff until a gentleman intervenes and hands them £20 they didn’t realize they had won. Buoyed by this serendipity, they split up to chase luck at the tables on their second chance. Mary’s luck steadily climbs, bringing in a substantial windfall, while Tony endures a streak of losses.

Across the casino’s glare and the hotel’s shadowed corners, Vera’s heart hardens and she recalibrates her plans. Miss Madden accompanies the social whirl as Vera’s fiancé’s whereabouts become a talking point for the entourage, including the ever-watchful Landlady and other party members. The pursuit of Tony intensifies as Vera pulls him into the Monte Carlo milieu, and the two couples’ fates become intertwined in a web of chance, longing, and pride.

A crucial turn arrives when Vera, still nursing her obsession, makes a bold play for Tony, intent on keeping him as hers. She reaches out before Mary can reveal the truth of her own feelings, and the moment becomes a turning point. Heartbreak drives Mary to a dangerous edge; she climbs out onto a hotel ledge, while Tony, realizing where his heart truly lies, finds her and speaks the words that shift everything: he loves Mary. The revelation unsettles Vera, who, in a last bid to salvage her own happiness, pivots toward another option—Lord Rufus Paul—a choice that underscores the film’s playful exploration of desire and social expectation.

Throughout this story, the ensemble cast—Lady at Roulette Table, the bachelor crowd, and a rotating gallery of friends and observers—adds color to a tale built on misread signals, redirected ambitions, and the messy, human path to true affection. The narrative maintains a light, buoyant rhythm even as it navigates heartbreak, risk, and reconciliation, offering a window into a world where luck, class, and love collide under the bright lights of Monte Carlo and the more intimate rooms of a seaside hotel.

The film ultimately trusts in a hopeful core: love can emerge from chaotic sequences of missteps, and a chance encounter can reframe a life, even as the people involved grapple with pride, societal expectations, and the enduring pull of the heart.
