His life takes an unexpected turn one evening when he hears a mysterious whisper: “If you build it, he will come.” This ethereal message leads him to envision a baseball diamond emerging from his cornfield, with the ghostly figure of Shoeless Joe Jackson at the center. Encouraged by Annie’s unwavering support, Ray takes the bold step of plowing under part of their crop to build this mystical ballpark, risking financial ruin in the process.

As he embarks on this extraordinary journey, Ray shares with Karin the captivating stories of the 1919 Black Sox Scandal, a tale that ignited his father’s love for baseball. Doubts begin to creep in as time passes, but hope reignites when Shoeless Joe returns, accompanied by the spirits of seven other players. Yet, tensions rise as Annie’s brother, Mark, warns them of looming financial disaster, ignorant of the supernatural events unfolding around them.

The voice continues to guide Ray, urging him to “ease his pain” as he tries to reconcile his own ambitions with those of his father. Their lives change dramatically during a PTA meeting where Annie passionately advocates for the works of Terence Mann, a groundbreaking author and activist. This sparks a realization for Ray: the voice he hears connects to Mann, who once created a fictional character named “John Kinsella” and harbored dreams of playing for the legendary Brooklyn Dodgers.

That same night, Ray and Annie experience a shared dream of attending a game at Fenway Park, leading Ray to Boston in search of Terence Mann. Their encounter reveals that Mann too has been summoned by the same voice and shares visions of haunting statistics tied to baseball history. They travel to Chisholm, Minnesota, where they unravel the truth about Doctor Graham, who was believed to have lived a life dedicated to medicine but actually died years ago. This revelation sends Ray spiraling through memories of his childhood, deepening his understanding of the complex relationship he had with his father, who always longed to bond over baseball.

The weight of loss heavy on his heart, Ray confides in Mann about his father’s own dreams and the regrets that have lingered since Ray was a child. As they move forward, Mark’s insistence on selling the farm highlights the family’s precarious finances, but Karin remains hopeful, believing people will come to witness the magical games Ray has created. Mann echoes this sentiment, famously proclaiming, “People will come.” Tensions boil over when Ray and Mark clash, leading to a dangerous accident involving Karin.
