Heaven and Hell are engaged in a cosmic battle for Manny's soul. Lola, an angel, is sent by Marina to salvage Manny's troubled soul before he falls into darkness due to his brain injuries and despair. Simultaneously, Carmen, a demon, is tasked by Davenport to reinvigorate Manny's fighting spirit. However, Davenport later forms an alliance with Marina, arguing that humanity deserves freedom of choice, leading both realms to work toward Manny's redemption rather than competition.

Lola takes on the guise of Manny's estranged wife as part of her angelic mission to salvage his soul. With Manny spiraling into despair due to his career-ending brain injuries and mounting financial troubles, Lola uses this disguise to reconnect him with his mother and reignite his will to live, appealing to his emotional core rather than his material desires.

Carmen, a demon from Hell, adopts the disguise of Manny's cousin to get close to him and become a significant part of her mission. By living in his flat and presenting herself as family, she aims to influence him to reclaim his boxing career, using his guilt and debt as motivation to get him back in the ring.

Both celestial agents take low-paying jobs at a hypermarket to be near Manny and influence his life. Working together in the oppressive workplace allows them to bond over their shared disdain for management and empathize with struggling employees, gradually building trust while they pursue their separate missions to save him.

Davenport, facing pressure from Hell's internal management conflicts, reaches out to Marina in Heaven. They share a mutual recognition that neither realm can exist without the other, and they argue that humanity deserves freedom of choice. This unprecedented cooperation leads Davenport to instruct Carmen to work alongside Lola rather than against her.

Desperate to free Manny from his crushing debts and boxing obligations, Lola and Carmen devise a heist to steal money from the hypermarket's cashier office. They hope the stolen cash will pay off Manny's debts to the corrupt police chief, allowing him to escape his despair and the dangerous thugs pursuing him.

Manny sacrifices himself to help Lola and Carmen escape when they return to his apartment and are ambushed by the corrupt police chief. He is fatally injured in the act of saving them, but his selfless sacrifice allows him to ascend to Heaven, rewarded for his moral courage despite his previous struggles with despair.

After the failed heist at the hypermarket, Lola and Carmen are arrested and imprisoned in a Spanish jail. They must face harsh earthly consequences for their actions, even though their intentions were to help Manny. Their cosmic missions do not protect them from human law.

After Carmen is released from jail, the powers of the underworld reward her for her role in Manny's redemption. She is elevated to a position of notable status in Hell, far beyond her previous role as a waitress, and is granted the transformation back into a man, marking a radical new chapter in her eternal existence.

Manny sacrifices himself because he has finally found genuine connection and purpose through his relationships with Lola and Carmen. After living in despair, he chooses to act selflessly, helping the two women escape the deadly trap set by the corrupt police chief, which leads to his fatal injuries but also his redemption.
