Hans Behrendt's historical drama was catalogued among screen versions of Büchner's play, but it does not credit Büchner and ranges across a longer period, beginning with the fate of Louis XVI before concentrating on Danton's conflict with Robespierre, arrest, trial, and execution. It converts the play's fractured documentary voices and philosophical debate into a more conventional biographical struggle, adds a romanticized Louise Gély, and sharply polarizes the two leaders. The relation is therefore partial rather than direct: Büchner supplies the recognizable dramatic model, while the film authors construct their own historical narrative.
