Set on the Thessalian plain in 1910, tenant farmers endure oppression from invading Arvanites and the greedy landlord Stratos Karatzas, who takes most of the harvest. Maya, the spirited daughter of a farmer, leads the fight for better conditions and defends her love, Leftris, against Karatzas and his scheming niece Vgenio. After Leftris is drafted and captured, he escapes and returns to Maya, securing their union.
