Six‑year‑old Jiro Uehara lives with his activist parents, an older sister and a younger sister. Their father Ichiro, unemployed and quick‑tempered, sparks a violent incident when Jiro retaliates against a bullying junior‑high student. Pressured by school and child‑welfare officials, the family moves to Ichiro’s hometown, Iriomotejima, which is caught in a bitter resort‑development dispute. Ichiro and his wife Sakura are arrested, then escape, becoming fugitives separated from their children, who nonetheless support their parents’ refusal to submit to the authorities.
