Fritz Lang retains Moonfleet's Dorset setting, young John, the Mohune legend, smuggling, crypt, coded treasure, and an adult protector, but transforms Elzevir Block into the rakish Jeremy Fox and invents an aristocratic history, romance, and betrayal around Stewart Granger's role. The film's emotional center remains the boy's faith in a compromised man, yet its plot departs too extensively for direct adaptation. Falkner's novel provides the full diamond quest, prison ordeal, shipwreck, and long moral consequences of greed that the Gothic screen version rearranges.
