Adapted from Eliza Orzeszkowa’s novel, the film takes place in 1886 Lithuania, where a bitter feud erupts between the peasant Bohatyrowicz clan and the aristocratic Korczyński family of Korczyn. Amid the social and familial strife, Justyna Orzelska, niece of Benedykt Korczyński, falls for Jan Bohatyrowicz. Their love is tested as it strives to break the entrenched class divide separating their worlds.
