Benjamin, a free‑spirited young doctor, falls for Manette, the beautiful innkeeper’s daughter, but she refuses him until she sees a marriage contract, which clashes with his love of independence. His sister Bettine also pushes him toward Arabelle, the daughter of the elderly Dr. Minxit, which he resists. After a mishap involving the pompous Marquis, Benjamin becomes the target of a humiliating prank and is later arrested. With the aid of the dashing Vicomte Hector de Pont‑Cassé, he plots revenge and helps Manette confront her father’s opposition, while the Marquis’s schemes continue to entangle them both.
