Deputy Philippe Dubaye awakens his longtime friend Xavier Maréchal in the dead of night to tell him he has just murdered Serrano, a racketeer with strong political ties. Serrano possessed evidence linking Dubaye to corrupt dealings and intended to use it against the deputy. Xavier volunteers to help conceal the crime, but Dubaye’s alibi quickly unravels. A range of powerful figures—politicians, businessmen, shady intermediaries and the police—begin hunting the incriminating documents by any means necessary.
