Set in 1987 during a hunger strike by Egypt’s film industry, Youssef Chahine appears as Yehia, the celebrated director chronicled in his earlier works “Alexandria… Why?” and “An Egyptian Story.” Obsessively attached to the handsome actor Amr he discovered, Yehia pushes him into shifting roles—from a demanding Hamlet to the lead in a musical about Alexander the Great—while his own view of Amr continually evolves.
