In 1890s San Francisco, the violent hatchet men of a powerful Chinese tong dominate a world of slave girls, opium dens and vice. Eighteen‑year‑old Suzie, a stowaway from China, slips ashore and is thrust into the brutal tong wars, witnessing the murder of a runaway “love‑slave.” She flees, finds refuge at the Mandarin Club, where her distant uncle Wong—head of the Red Dragon tong—offers her work.
